Bird Tours - Images by G

Professionally Assisted & Unassisted Tours within Tampa Bay's Estuary

One of the joys of photographing Florida's Wildlife is being able to share that with others who enjoy and appreciate it as much as I do.  I am so pleased to offer two types of Bird Photography Tours in the 2020 Breeding and Nesting Season.

Professionally Assisted  Tours will be provided by myself and Award Winning Photographer Sandra Rodriguez.  They will be offered on Weekends only and will offer 'in camera' assistance while shooting.  Participants will have the option of working together with Sandra and I over lunch editing a few of their images from the morning session.

Non Assisted  Tours will be offered on Weekdays and on Weekends that have not been dedicated to Professionally Assisted Tours.

2020 Professionally Instructed Tours

w/ Captain Gwen & Sandra Rodriguez

Captain Gwen & Sandra Rodriguez

Whether you are an avid Avian Photographer or a novice, these tours are for you!  There is nothing quite as beautiful, fascinating or thrilling than observing & photographing  birds in their natural habitat displaying extraordinary mating rituals and preparing nests in the beginning of the season. Towards the end of the season, family antics in the nest are the best.  During this season, all the birds will be donning full breeding colors and feathers.  You won't believe your eyes!

I am so excited to be offering professionally assisted tours with my good friend and photography mentor, Sandra Rodriguez.  Sandra is an Award Winning nature, landscape & portrait photographer and has a plethora of experience behind the camera.  If you know Sandra then you know she is a warm, engaging woman with a fountain of experience that she loves sharing with others.  Sandra is extremely hands on.  You will find her expertise to be a resource that will serve you well on these trips.  Want to hone the skills you already have?  Great, Sandra and I can help you trouble shoot or problem solve in the field.  Are you new at this altogether?  Awesome!!  We would love to help you get started!!

This will be my third year photographing these birds at these undisclosed locations.  Sandra and I enjoyed shooting at these locations together several times this past year.  Our goal is to give you the same experience we have been fortunate enough to have and the pictures to show for it.  You will be amazed at all the Species you will be able to see, including: Great Blue Herons, White Egrets, Snowy Egrets, Reddish Egrets, Reddish Egrets - White Morph, Tri-Colored Herons, Little Blue Herons, Green Herons, Ibis, Roseatte Spoonbills, Cormorants & Pelicans.  You may see Night Herons, Cattle Egrets, Mating Doves, a King Fisher or two, and perhaps an Osprey (the Osprey & King Fisher do not nest at this location but occasionally make a visit.  In addition to birds, you will be able to enjoy the sunrise, the sunset or both, depending on the trip(s) you choose.

In addition to being an avid bird and portrait photographer, I am also a USCG licensed Captain.   I will be taking you to undisclosed location(s) by boat.  There is only room for 4 photographers and your gear on each trip.  This insures you will have plenty of room to move around and on  professionally assisted tours you will receive the attention you deserve.

All trips will depart from Maximo Park Boat Ramp in St. Petersburg, Florida.  Parking is free and it is safe to leave your car while we are gone.

Equipment Note:  I will be using a Canon 80D and a Sigma 150-600mm lens.  Sandra uses a Canon EOS-R and a Canon 400mm lens with a 1.4 extender.   Bring whatever camera and lens you are most comfortable with.  I recommend you have at least 500mm capability.  Sandra and I both recommend that if you use a 400mm lens, you may want to purchase an extender before the trip.  Also, DO NOT bring a lens that requires a tripod.  You WILL NOT be able to shoot with a tripod, we will be shooting from the boat.  You may also want to bring a landscape lens as the sunrise and sunsets are beautiful.
